Seahaven

<questlist 88> / <questlist seahaven>

It is now only legends that remember ancient times, when the northern regions were fertile and plentiful and not icy tundra and frozen snow. Knowledge has been lost of the terrible wars fought between the magic users and wizards which broke and ruptured the earth, razing mountains and boiling oceans. There is one living testimony of ancient times who still remains to tell the tale. She is a mermaid, seek her help to begin your quest. Do not underestimate the journey, many adventurers have tried and only a few have returned, with terrible stories to tell.

This is a party quest with special conditions;
[1] The party may not be more than two people.
[2] Both party members must be starting the quest from the beginning at the same time, so you must decide on the partner before you begin to work on any part of the quest. You may not ever team up with someone who knows part of the solution that you do not.

Quest Instructions

(last solved and updated: November 2023)

  1. Prior to visiting Seahaven, you'll need at least one light source.
  2. Additional items are swim trunks, and a shovel. Both of these items can be found in the Seacave area. Provided that you already have a light source in your inventory let's go obtain the swim trunks. Begin by travelling <fantasy, portal, 12w, leave, 2w, 6s, e, 2se>. Make note of THIS room, as you'll need to return to it once you locate the swim trunks in the next step.
  3. <gather> multiple times in each of the rooms 'On the Rocks'. Once you find The freshly slain corpse of A swimmer, <search corpse> and <get all from corpse>. The items you'll find will be random though when you gather.
You find amongst the junk lying around:
The freshly slain corpse of A swimmer.

    get all from corpse
    Swimming Trunks: Ok.
  4. Return to the entrance of the Seacave area (step 2).
  5. Now travel <2sw, push boulder>
  6. Continue to <push boulder> until:
You give an almighty heave. The boulder stays exactly where God intended, but your feet slip comically from under you. That could have really hurt except you landed in a small fissure at the base of the cliff.
  7. <d, kill tentacle>
    10k : Tentacle of Bartek
  8. <n, kill tentacle>
    10k : Tentacle of Bartek
    10k : Tentacle of Bartek
  9. <n, kill tentacle>
    9k : Tentacle of Bartek
    10k : Tentacle of Bartek
    10k : Tentacle of Bartek
  10. <n, kill tentacle>
    10k : Tentacle of Bartek
    9k : Tentacle of Bartek
    101k : Head of Bartek
  11. <search cave> - you should now have a snow shovel in your inventory.
    A Snow Shovel
A large and unwieldy snow shovel which has obviously had plenty of use. It is beaten and worn, but looks like it could still perform its job adequately.
    It doesn't look too heavy.
  12. <3s, u, out, 2ne, 2nw, w, 17n, 10e, 12n, 2e, n, e, n> - You should now be in Seahaven.
  13. <climb ramp>
You carefully begin to climb up the narrow and dangerous ice chute. This isn't as easy as it first appeared...
Your foot slips on the frictionless ice. Looking down, it is a long way to fall. You turn back to the ice and continue climbing...
You finally reach the top and clamber over breathless onto the glacier.
  14. <jump snow, dig snow>
You begin to dig away, soon realizing that you better use your snow shovel if you are going to get anywhere. This is hard labor, killing Minotaurs is a piece of cake compared to this.
Damn wizards, making me toil away in some stupid crevasse digging snow when I could be out killing Verbeegs...
Well that about does it, a nice looking ice tunnel leading deep into the snow.
  15. IMPORTANT NOTE (from Elminster): There are a lot of steps here. Take your time, and be patient. If you end up getting yourself blocked with the boulders, come back the next day and start again. I was able to pass through these instructions on my third try, and I partly expect it was due to entering something too many or too few times on my original attempts. Make good use of the <history> command when you can't remember how many times you did something. These directions will get you there!
    Now, travel <tunnel>

It's important you don't move too fast or you'll screw up the order.

  42. <push east boulder> ...wait for fall

  115. <push east boulder> - You should now have 2 exits, west and up.
  116. <8u, tunnel>
You cautiously enter the small tunnel.

Suddenly, you think the whole thing is caving in! Rocks and snow hurtle down at you from above.

In the midst of the chaos you dive forward, emerging into a cavern and thankful for your life. There is no way you are going back in there.
  117. <4n, e, se, n, get log>
  118. <s, 2nw, w, nw, sw, e, 2s, 2w, n, e, get log>
  119. <w, s, 2e, 2n, w, ne, se, n, ne, s, 2ne, 2s, e, n, get log>
  120. <s, w, se, 2w, get log>

  124. <cover pit with snow>
  125. <3n, e, nw, w, n, nw, sw, w, nw, 2n>
  126. With a dragon now chasing you, travel <2s, se, e, ne, se, s, e, se, w, 2s, leap pit>
The tremendous ice dragon comes rushing towards the end of the cavern, a pure lust for your blood in its eyes.

As it moves toward you with unearthly speed and reaches to end your existence in this world, it enters the snowy cavern before you.

In a split second the logs shatter and with an enormous crash the beast is swallowed by the pit and is gone.
  127. <leap pit, 2n, e, nw, w, n, nw, sw, w, nw, 3n> - you should now be safely at the Gates of Seahaven.
  128. <open gates>
You pull on the huge gates and with hardly any effort they begin to slowly open. That strikes you as very strange ... almost magical, given how tremendously large the gates are. You would not expect to be able to move them. Perhaps someone is expecting you ...
  129. NOTE: When you <peer haze>, you will see the layout of the rooms below you, which represent an empty chess board. Each cross you pick up each represents a Queen, and will need to be placed one on each row of the board in such a way that no queen can attack another. The size of your board may change, and therefore the layout of the queens will need to match the number of rows on the board (9 rows = 9 crosses). When you are done placing the queens, come back and <peer haze> once again to verify your layout. If you make a mistake, you can <remove cross> in that room which will return it back to you.
Now travel <9n, 9e, n, peer haze>. Make note of THIS room as you'll need to return to it once you've placed your crosses.
  130. <pick cross> (8 times if you have an 8x8 size board, 9 times if you have a 9x9 size board, or 10 times if you have a 10x10 size board)
  131. Example syntax once you've acquired the crosses: <s, 2w, place cross>
  132. Continue to travel across the board, placing the crosses in the pattern that fits your board. Example solutions can be found for different sized boards: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_queens_puzzle
  133. Return to the initial room where you acquired the crosses - <align crystal>
You turn the crystal to align its pristine face with the light ray. Your protection from heat has faded.

The crystal hums and reverberates, and magical colored lights dart out and begin to fill the room in fantastic patterns.

All of a sudden you hear a tremendous explosion and all the magical lights dart out of the room forming a tremendous bolt of pure energy.

You hear a tremendous crash, like the boom of thunder, and then a metallic clatter as something falls onto the marble outside. The crystal returns to its original position.
  134. <n> - you're teleported away
  135. <get diary, n, climb down, turn wheel>
  136. Continue to <turn wheel> A LOT. ...wait, and a ship will take off eventually
NOTE: This will feel like a very long time as the ship sequence is quite lengthy.
  137. <s, 2se, 2sw, 2nw, swim, give diary to mermaid>
