Rod of Lordly Might


The Rod of Lordly Might is a mystical and powerful weapon. It has a number of attributes that can grow with use. In a fairly unique fashion, these increases will stick with your character for all time, including through reboots. Additionally, any properly registered alternate characters will also share in the growth of this weapons powers.

So what is it, and how does it work? Fundamentally, it is a normal weapon. A 'rod' in its base form. It has a large number of runes on it, which are to be unlocked through use. The runes fall into two base categories: Weapon and Utility. When you <look at runes>, the various runes will be color coded based on your progress to unlocking. The colors will shift from zero training (dark black) to fully unlocked (bright cyan). Each rune also has a progress meter, which you can check by touching the rune. For example: <touch dragon rune>. Once fully unlocked, the same command can be issued to activate the rune.

Weapon Runes: When you first begin to wield the Rod of Lordly Might, it will be as a blunt weapon, similar to a rod or mace. This base rune, star, is unlocked on first contact with the weapon, and is always the rune you touch to return it to its original form. Use in combat will begin to unlock the next weapon rune in line: Dragon. Once fully unlocked, you will see an ASCII image of a lightning strike, and the color of the rune will change to the final bright cyan. Here you can <touch dragon rune> to transform it into the flame blade. Unlike many weapon restrictions on the mud, if you can wield the rod in its basic form, you can also wield it in its various forms. Beyond dragon is frost, and you must wield the rod in dragon form to begin to unlock frost. Continuing this process from one weapon rune to the next, you must wield the prior rune to unlock the successor. Each rune type is a different weapon type, and each of these will deal a different type of damage. Each form is max weapon class of 100.

Utility Runes: Utility runes unlock generally via using the item in combat under certain conditions. Various conditions may be while drunk, or killing good aligned enemies (or evil), among other specific circumstances. They unlock runes that give valuable abilities. Some runes are unlocked on first use of the weapon, such as healing HP or SP, while others, such as teleporting, must be unlocked through use in the right conditions. Each power requires energy from the weapon which is stored as 'stars'. To see how many stars you have available, you can <touch diamond rune> for a report. A HP heal will use 1 star, where a teleport will use 2. Stars return through use and other conditions.

Once wielded, the lore is more clear:
You seek enlightenment with the divine graces of this remnant of the old god's penchant for war. Do not fear nor forget that you hold a weapon of the gods, and as such, know that battle is the surest way to reveal the secrets of the glyphs you seek. Besides pure combat, there are other factors that drive toward proficiency of those beyond the first ten runes. These factors include the myriad variety of enemies you face, your own personal condition while fighting, and even the condition of the battlefield itself plays a key role. Lastly, some runes only become unlockable when you have mastered a previous one, though all, once learned, are retained and available to each of your variant souls across the Three Kingdoms.

Forged into being by the timeless provenance of that which created the Three Kingdoms themselves, its form is composed of two gleaming metallic spheres at each end of a central median shaft, gripped in a blue-steel alloy. From merely touching it, you know the item wells primal energy and extraordinary power. It was whispered by the eldest ancestors of long-dead sages that the creator himself bound a portion of his divine grace within this holy relic. You cast no doubt upon these myths, nor brush them aside as mere parable, for when the light gleams off the legendary steel of this wondrous item, you feel the eyes of a god watching over you. Masterfully crafted upon the shaft you see many runes, each inlaid with a different exquisite symbol glinting in the light.

There is a slight clank as the metal spheres spin and contract themselves into the central shaft of the relic. Moments later, there is a loud, piercing roar as a searing blade of crimson dragonfire extends from one end. The shaft in your hand then forms into a powerfully gripped sword hilt.
